Car Insurance in Georgia
Updated August 2026
Georgia is an at-fault state with 25/50/25 minimum liability limits: $25,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Unlike Florida next door, there's no PIP requirement — the driver who causes a crash pays for it, through their liability coverage.
Minimums are the legal floor, not a recommendation: a serious Atlanta-metro accident can exceed $25,000 in vehicle damage alone. That's why comparing what different carriers charge for higher limits is usually the more useful exercise than shopping the bare minimum.
| Coverage | Required minimum |

How Georgia's at-fault system works
After a crash, the at-fault driver's liability coverage pays for the other side's injuries and damage. Your own injuries ride on the other driver's policy — or on your own optional coverages (medical payments, uninsured motorist) when the other driver is uninsured or underinsured.
Georgia offers uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage that you can reject in writing. Given how many drivers nationally carry no insurance — 15.4% in 2023, per the Insurance Research Council — many Georgia drivers keep it.
SR-22s in Georgia
Georgia uses SR-22 filings (and the stricter SR-22A for some repeat violations) to prove financial responsibility after suspensions and serious violations. The filing itself is inexpensive; the premium attached to the underlying violation is the real cost — and carriers price the same record very differently, which makes comparing quotes matter most for exactly these drivers.

Liability coverage of at least $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage (25/50/25), per O.C.G.A. §33-7-11. Georgia does not require PIP — it's an at-fault state.
Is Georgia a no-fault state?+
No. Georgia is an at-fault (tort) state: the driver who causes the accident is responsible for the resulting damage, paid through their liability coverage.
Does Georgia use SR-22s?+
