Allstate Car Insurance Review
Updated August 2026
Allstate was founded in 1931 as Sears' insurance arm and grew into one of the country's largest auto insurers, publicly traded on the NYSE and rated A+ (Superior) by AM Best. Like State Farm it built a network of captive agents; unlike State Farm it also runs a genuine direct channel, so Florida drivers can buy from a local Allstate office or entirely online.
The less obvious part of the Allstate story matters most in Florida: the corporate family. Through National General, Allstate's umbrella also covers non-standard brands — including Direct Auto, a storefront SR-22 specialist concentrated in the Southeast. The Allstate name on the door is standard-market; the family behind it stretches much further down the risk spectrum.

Agents plus direct: two doors into the same company
Allstate's captive agents work the way State Farm's do — a local office, one brand, service in person — but the company also quotes and sells direct online and by phone for drivers who don't want the office visit. That flexibility puts it somewhere between State Farm's agent-only world and GEICO's agent-free one.
What neither door provides is a view of the rest of the market. A captive Allstate agent can't tell you what Progressive or GEICO would charge the same household, and the direct site quotes Allstate alone. In Florida's spread-out pricing environment, the cross-carrier comparison still has to happen outside the company, whichever door you use.
Drivewise, Milewise and how Allstate prices
Drivewise is Allstate's usage-based program: an app that scores braking, speed and phone activity, feeding a discount that reflects how you actually drive. Milewise is the more radical sibling — true pay-per-mile insurance offered in select states, aimed at drivers whose cars mostly sit. Availability shifts, so confirm what's currently offered in Florida rather than assuming either way.
Underneath the telematics, Allstate rates on the same long list of factors as every major carrier, and as a publicly traded insurer its pricing posture in a given state can tighten or loosen noticeably year to year. That volatility cuts both ways — which is precisely why a quote from last cycle tells you little about this one.
The wider family: National General and Direct Auto
Since acquiring National General, Allstate's corporate family has included carriers built for the business Allstate itself doesn't chase — non-standard profiles, SR-22 and FR-44 filings, drivers coming off suspensions. Direct Auto, with its storefront-plus-direct model concentrated in the Southeast including Florida, is the most visible of these.
For a Florida driver the practical takeaway is that an unattractive Allstate quote — or a declination — is the start of the search, not the end. The same family, and its competitors, price filing-heavy profiles on entirely different curves. Comparing across that non-standard tier is where the real spread shows up.
Profiles Allstate tends to fit
Educational patterns from how the company positions itself — not a recommendation. The only way to know your price is to compare quotes.
- Drivers who want a local agent available but prefer managing the policy day to day in an app
- Careful drivers open to Drivewise's usage-based discount
- Very-low-mileage drivers — where Milewise's pay-per-mile model is currently offered
- Households bundling auto with home or condo coverage through one office

Compare ratesFrequently asked questions
Is Allstate cheap in Florida?+
Like every major carrier, it depends on your profile — Allstate can be the sharpest quote for one household and mid-pack for the next. Statewide, full coverage in Florida typically runs about $2,786–$2,953 a year, a range wide enough that comparing several carriers is worth real money.
Does Allstate offer pay-per-mile insurance in Florida?+
Milewise, Allstate's pay-per-mile program, is offered in select states and the lineup changes over time. If your car mostly sits, it's worth checking Milewise's current Florida availability when you quote — and comparing the result against conventional low-mileage discounts elsewhere.
What's the difference between Allstate and Direct Auto?+
They're part of the same corporate family — Direct Auto sits under National General, which Allstate acquired — but they serve different markets. Allstate is a standard-market carrier; Direct Auto specializes in non-standard business, including SR-22 filings, through storefronts and direct sales concentrated in the Southeast. Same family, very different appetite and pricing.
Will Allstate write my policy if I need an SR-22 or FR-44?+
That depends on your full record — Allstate is a standard-market company, and filing-heavy profiles often land better elsewhere. Florida's FR-44, required after DUI-related convictions, carries 100/300/50 liability limits. Non-standard specialists, including Direct Auto within Allstate's own family, compete hard for that business, so compare before assuming any single answer.
