GEICO Car Insurance Review
Updated August 2026
GEICO began in 1936 writing policies for government employees and military officers, and it grew into one of the largest auto insurers in the country almost entirely without agents. Today it's a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway with an A++ (Superior) financial-strength rating from AM Best — about as strong a claims-paying pedigree as the scale allows — and one of the most heavily quoted names in Florida.
The thing to understand before comparing is the model: GEICO is direct. There's no independent agency quoting it beside rivals and no captive agent re-shopping it at renewal. You bring GEICO into your own comparison, or it doesn't get compared at all — which, in a state where quotes spread as widely as Florida's, is worth doing deliberately.

The direct model, Florida edition
GEICO is built for self-service. Quoting, buying, ID cards, claims — the company's assumption is that you'll handle all of it in the app or by phone, and the experience is polished accordingly. That's the opposite of State Farm's neighborhood-agent model and different from Progressive, which runs direct and independent-agent channels side by side.
For Florida drivers the trade-off is straightforward. Cutting out the agency layer keeps GEICO's cost structure lean, which is part of why it prices aggressively for profiles it wants. What you give up is a person whose job includes re-shopping your renewal — so when a GEICO renewal creeps up, nobody notices except you.
DriveEasy and how GEICO prices
DriveEasy is GEICO's usage-based program: a phone app that watches braking, cornering, phone handling and mileage, then adjusts your rate based on how you actually drive. Like most telematics programs it tends to reward smooth, low-mileage, hands-off-the-phone driving — and to be less kind to hard brakers and heavy night drivers.
Beyond telematics, GEICO rates on the same dozens of factors as every major carrier, and its appetite in Florida moves year to year. Florida's Office of Insurance Regulation reported that the five largest auto insurer groups in the state filed average decreases of roughly 8% for 2026 — a reminder that last year's quote, from GEICO or anyone else, is stale evidence.
SR-22s: a standard-market company with a filing desk
GEICO files SR-22s routinely, and for many Florida drivers who need one — after a lapse, a suspension, an uninsured accident — it's a mainstream option worth quoting. But it is a standard-market company, not a non-standard specialist: its appetite for genuinely rough records is narrower than carriers built for that business.
Florida adds a wrinkle: DUI-related convictions trigger the FR-44 instead, which requires 100/300/50 liability limits — far above state minimums. The filing fee itself typically runs about $15–25; the premium attached to it is where quotes diverge sharply, which is exactly when comparing against non-standard specialists pays.
Profiles GEICO tends to fit
Educational patterns from how the company positions itself — not a recommendation. The only way to know your price is to compare quotes.
- Self-service drivers who would rather manage a policy in an app than sit in an agent's office
- Clean-record and lightly blemished profiles that stay inside the standard market's appetite
- Smooth, low-mileage drivers open to DriveEasy's usage-based discount
- Drivers who need an SR-22 filed but whose record hasn't pushed them fully into the non-standard market

Compare ratesFrequently asked questions
Does GEICO file SR-22s in Florida?+
Yes — GEICO is one of the standard-market carriers that commonly handles SR-22 filings. Florida's FR-44, required after DUI-related convictions and carrying 100/300/50 liability limits, is a heavier ask, and whether any carrier will write it depends on your full record. Quote GEICO alongside non-standard specialists before deciding.
Is GEICO cheap in Florida?+
For some profiles, very; for others, unremarkable. Statewide, full coverage in Florida typically runs about $2,786–$2,953 a year, and individual quotes land all over that range depending on record, ZIP code and vehicle. The only way to know where GEICO puts you is to quote it against several rivals.
What is DriveEasy and should I enroll?+
DriveEasy is GEICO's usage-based program — an app that scores your braking, phone use and mileage and adjusts your rate accordingly. It tends to favor smooth, low-mileage drivers, and in some states poor scores can raise rates rather than just shrink a discount, so read the current Florida program terms before opting in.
Can a local agent quote GEICO for me?+
Generally no — GEICO's model is direct, so independent agencies can't shop it for you and there's no captive-agent network servicing policies the way State Farm or Allstate operates. If you want GEICO in your comparison, you add it yourself online or by phone alongside the quotes an agent or comparison service gathers.
