Private renewal worksheet

Compare the current policy with the renewal record

Copy only the policy details needed for comparison. The tool flags changes; it does not decide whether a coverage or company is right for you.

No account, upload or save action: entries stay in this tab and clear when the page is refreshed. Do not enter names, policy numbers, VINs, addresses, driver-license numbers or payment information.

A change is a question to resolve, not proof that the renewal is better or worse. Confirm each difference against the policy forms and written insurer explanation.

Premium and driver or vehicle counts are compared as numbers; other entries ignore capitalization, spaces, dollar signs and commas. The tool cannot interpret policy language or determine whether differently worded forms provide equivalent coverage.

A four-pass renewal review

Read the renewal as a new policy decision

A familiar logo and policy number can make a renewal feel automatic. The new term still deserves a controlled review because household facts, coverage selections, forms, price and billing conditions can change independently.

  1. 01

    Confirm the record

Check term dates, garaging information, listed drivers, vehicle year/make/model and any lender. Use the actual documents; do not rely on what you remember from the prior term.

  2. 02

    Compare coverage line by line

Review liability limits, UM/UIM, first-party injury benefits, collision, comprehensive, rental and every deductible. Treat missing or differently worded entries as questions.

  3. 03

    Read forms and conditions

Identify new, removed or revised endorsements and discounts. Ask whether a displayed premium assumes telematics, a bundle, automatic payments or a particular payment plan.

  4. 04

    Verify the issued policy

After a correction or purchase, review the final declarations page and forms. Keep the renewal, written explanation and issued record together.

Price needs a common denominator

Compare the full term before the installment

A monthly bill can change because the premium changed, the number of installments changed, a fee was added or the first payment is larger. Record the full policy-term premium first, then keep the billing schedule beside it. The worksheet calculates only the change between the two term premiums you enter.

Price should be reviewed after the policy design. If a deductible, limit or optional benefit changed, ask for a revised renewal or quote on the same terms before using cost to rank alternatives.

When something is unclear

Turn each difference into a written question

Ask the insurer or licensed agent to identify the exact entry, form or condition that changed and provide the explanation in writing. If the record is incorrect, request a corrected declarations page and review the replacement rather than relying on a phone summary.

  • What changed from the prior term, and where is that change shown?
  • Is the term premium based on the same drivers, vehicles, limits and deductibles?
  • Which discounts or payment assumptions are included, and when can they end?
  • Did any form, endorsement, exclusion or named-driver status change?
  • When will a correction take effect, and which revised document confirms it?

Renewal is not nonrenewal

Read the notice type before taking action

A renewal proposes another policy term. A nonrenewal says the insurer will not continue the policy after expiration. Cancellation ends coverage before the normal expiration date. Notice timing, permissible reasons and appeal or complaint options differ by state.

State-specific help

Use the regulator named in your state guide

If the document is a cancellation or nonrenewal notice—or an explanation remains unresolved—check the notice itself and contact the insurance department for the policy state.

These sources explain common policy fields and review practices. The issued policy and the law of the policy state control the actual contract and notice rules.

Car insurance renewal review FAQs

Does this tool tell me whether to renew my policy?+

No. It organizes the values you enter and flags differences between two records. It cannot interpret all policy forms, decide how much coverage fits your finances, predict claim handling or determine whether another insurer will offer a policy.

Does ShowMyRates save the renewal information I enter?+

No. The worksheet has no account, upload, submit or save action. Entries remain in the current tab and clear when the page is refreshed. Do not enter names, addresses, policy numbers, VINs, driver-license numbers or payment information.

Why compare the full policy-term premium instead of one monthly payment?+

Installment amounts can reflect a first payment, later payments and fees. The full term gives the two records a common cost period. Review the actual billing schedule separately before accepting a renewal or replacing coverage.

What should I do when a coverage or endorsement changed?+

Ask the insurer or licensed agent to identify the change in writing and point to the relevant form or endorsement. Keep the explanation with the renewal record and review the issued declarations page after any correction.

Is a renewal notice the same as a nonrenewal notice?+

No. A renewal continues coverage for a new term, subject to its terms and price. Nonrenewal means the insurer will not continue the policy after expiration. Notice rules and available remedies vary by state, so use your state insurance department for local guidance.

After the renewal review

Need written alternatives on equal terms?

Use the quote worksheet to compare returned proposals. A ShowMyRates request is optional and may be reviewed by a listed licensed partner when one is available.
